Xhosa Basket Weaving Workshop
June 28 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pmR400
Join Norval Foundation in learning about the traditional craft of basket weaving, brought to you by Weavery.Handmade, and their team of passionate weavers.
This workshop is a space for the transmission of ancestral knowledge, in the form of a living traditional craft practice. You will learn about natural indigenous weaving materials and how to prepare and use them to create a simple woven basket. There will also be circle discussions covering relevant topics: culture and its value, belonging, importance of the act of creation etc.
A basket may or may not be completed within the timeframe of the weaving workshop, as our focus is on process rather than product. We do, however, undertake to guide participants through to completion of their piece, and impart skills, wherever possible, to allow for the option to complete the project at home.
Weavery is the medicine of artist René Bahloo, who shares traditional and contemporary basket weaving techniques through workshops and sharing circles, and brings cultural knowledge holders together to share their ancient crafting heritage and cultural practice, in Australia and South Africa.
Handmade is a non-profit organisation established with the main objective to inspire and reconnect the public with traditional African craft and crafting knowledge while recognising, empowering and celebrating individual crafters who still practice this heritage art form.
Together, they form Weavery.Handmade
