Exhibition Opening – in Pursuit of Venus [infected]
August 3 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pmFree
Norval Foundation is honoured to present the immersive video installation in Pursuit of Venus [infected] (2015-17) by Lisa Reihana (born New Zealand Aotearoa, 1964). Breath taking in its technically adept integration of a hand painted landscape with live action figures and a densely layered soundtrack, in Pursuit of Venus [infected] invites viewers to observe a series of restaged historical events, both real and imagined, of the first contact between British and Pacific Peoples.
Rather than replicating a European perspective, which dominates the majority of accounts of this moment, Reihana proposes a Māori and Pacific perspective, by drawing upon visual strategies, philosophies and identities that are particular to the community she is a part of. Simultaneously, in Pursuit of Venus [infected] draws upon traditions of popular culture and theatre, including the moving panorama, a type of rotating panoramic history painting that was common in the mid 1800s, Pantomime, a form of musical comedy, and theatre theory, including practices that break the ‘fourth wall’ of cinema by inserting viewers into the same space of the actors.
